Project Link This project took the traditional language arts "Writing Workshop" into the 21st Century
in three easy (but radical) ways:

  • It replaced pencil and paper (or even MS Word) drafting, revising, and peer editing with a better (and simpler) writing tool: a wiki.

  • It expanded the options for peer response and peer editing beyond the walls of the classroom, clock, city, nation, and culture--by enabling peer feedback, editing, and connection with students from around the world. By doing this, students had to be more aware of audience and how perceptions could differ based on a partner's culture and demographic location.

  • It replaced the "authentic" publishing of the 20th century classroom--hallways, newsletters, and literary journals.

At the end of the project, all of the student's stories were seamed together and published into an authentic publishing in the 1001 Flat World Tales "blook": a potentially endless series of stories from students around the world, inter-linked on individual student blogs.
(our finalized
Blook was a combination of ALL the Es1001tales participant's stories)

Technology Integration
A Collaborative and Safe Learning Environment
Wikis are great tools for engaging children in learning, involving parents in their child's education, and sharing resources with other teachers and schools.
With wikis’ Private Label, our class had the opportunity to engage in an authentic writing experience with students on the other side of the world safely. It provided a home-to-school connection for students who needed more time to work at home (24/7 opportunity) and a window into our classroom for family members, classmates, teachers, and friends.

Throughout this project, Wikispaces worked seamlessly with my instruction as it provided students with the opportunity to see the relevance and effectiveness of producing multiple drafts, and real time revisions by incorporating collaborate partners.
Students were able to see their changes real time, review others work, gather ideas and evaluate their arguments and ideas. It provided a community of writers and enabled students to share ideas, pose questions, critique writing and give feedback to others. Using real-time editing tools where students could publish, test out new ideas and drafts with an audience willing and able to respond 24/7 highlighted the purpose of revision.
And the Result...

Engagement and a
New Perspective on
the Writing Process
Writing is not an isolate in the classroom but it is a creative process
that involves the ability
to take a risk and try out new ideas and open ideas to the public.

Student Samples

I have created a Jog the Web Share illustrating the process 2 students took while using the Wikispace to create their persuasive piece.
Es1001Tales Jog the Web Share Project

PLEASE NOTE: Before clicking into the following Jog the WebShare, I would suggest you open up EvolvingEducator project again in another tab. This Jog The Web will not lead you back to this page, so you will need to make sure you have this project page to tab back to when the webshare is complete.

Student Reflection

I used PodOmatic, an open source podcast sharing site, to post the student reflections for each project.

Please Note: There are 3 Podcast Episodes in this Podmatic. Please scroll down to the the Es1001tales Student Reflection Episode to hear Abby's feedback and comments on her experience with this Collaborative Project.
